The Romanian Fruit Sector
Size of the sector
• 145,400 ha of orchards (decreasing from over 200,000 ha in 2007, picking up again since 2012)
• Dominant species: plum (70,700 ha) and apple (57,500 ha); Sector dominated by old plantations
Trends
• Diversification other species (cherries, nuts, berries) than just plums and apples
• Shift from traditional (extensive) orchards to intensive and super-intensive orchards
Why is it a promising sector?
• Long tradition in fruit production
• High priority sector in NRDP 2014-2020 (special dedicated sub-programme, with separate budget allocation)
• Promising future investments => increased demand for quality planting material, equipment, knowledge
• Insufficient supply of domestic certified planting material (especially virus-free)
• Demand for locally grown fruit is growing (and supermarkets try to adapt)
• Interest in berries is growing
