Hemp felt - fibre mats
This is the needling machine. This is the machine
where a plate with thousands of needles punches
into the thick layer of fibres. The rate can be as
high as 240 times a minute. It is possible to achieve
70 needle impacts per cm2. The needles cause the
fibres to become intertwined. This intertwining
has a random pattern and therefore the product
is called a ‘non-woven fleece’. Clothing often has
a woven structure in which the direction of the
weaving is visible.
The felt comes out of the needling machines here
and is rolled up and made ready for dispatching.
Up to 80 metres of felt can be put on one roll.
This is the punching and cutting machine.
Patterns are punched out of the felt produced
using a shaped die and a pressure of 150,000kg.
Such items as tree discs and mats for garden cress
are produced here.
